Eco-friendly, economical, regional! Official dedication for Holzhackschnitzelwerk Brakel
On March 31, 2004, North Rhine-Westphalia minister of the environment and agriculture Bärbel Höhn joined Höxter district administrator Hubertus Backhaus and mayor of Brakel, Friedhelm Spieker for the official launch of operations at the new woodchip factory for the Brakel heating cooperative.
The largest woodchip factory in Ostwestfalen-Lippe burns woodchips of natural wood and unpolluted scrap wood, from sawmills for example. The heat generated supplies five building complexes of municipal and public facilities.
The heating plant is operated by GNR (Gesellschaft Nachwachsender Rohstoffe), whose shareholders Agrardienst GmbH, a subsidiary of the local energy supplier E.ON Westfalen Weser and Stratmann city cleaning services each own equal parts.
The plant is the first in Germany, where farmers have invested money through their own institution and are simultaneously involved with operations. The Höxter-Warburg machinery cooperative is also providing the CEO of GNR, Norbert Hofnagel.
